Irish Inspiration

With St. Patrick’s Day upon us, we thought we’d take a moment to revel in Irish Wedding inspiration.  There are SO many ways to pay homage to your Irish heritage.  You may consider the Celtic tradition of hand fasting where you and your betrothed’s hands are literally bound during your wedding ceremony.  This is where the phrase “tying the knot’ originated.  Horse drawn carriages, bagpipes, touches of green or Irish Lace are also wonderful traditional choices.  For a different twist, feature Guinness or Mead (honey wine) on your menu.  The chocolate Guinness cake with whiskey caramel below has our mouths watering.  So does the clover inspired wedding bling for that matter.  Of course, we’ll also be keeping our eyes out for re-runs of The Quiet Man this weekend!

2013 Trend #7: The Pocket Square

Perhaps you’ve heard reports that 2013 will be the year of pockets on wedding dresses.  At Fancy Pants Event Planning, we find ourselves obsessed with a pocket trend of a different variety.   Nearly a year ago, Fashion Trends Daily observed “If you’ve noticed the telltale flash of a pocket square peeking out from a suit jacket, you might be watching Mad Men, or you might just be noticing one of the biggest resurgences in menswear history.”  Since then, perhaps Shannon Sharpe has caught your eye.  And like us, perhaps you have deemed him the best dressed man on sports television thanks to among other things the pocket square!  We especially love pocket squares that feature a subtle pattern to coordinate with the necktie.  We can’t wait to see this fashion trend refine the look of leading men in weddings across America this year!  How about you?

2013 Trend #6: Going Social

With each passing year, we thank the technology Gods for new advances that make event planning easier.  It is already hard for us to imagine the days before online registries, free wedding website templates and the almighty Pinterest!  In 2013, we predict couples will be “Going Social” as the proliferation of social media products expands directly into the wedding market.  Instagram photobooths and other photo sharing applications will seem like a natural part of the landscape at wedding receptions.

At Fancy Pants, we’ve had great success using Wedding Party (launched in August 2012) which allows attendees to share photos, videos and notes throughout the wedding timeline. Our clients love it because they experience firsthand how guests enjoy multiple events and even free time over their wedding weekend.  Absent loved ones can also view events from afar.  (For more details on how to use the app, please refer to our original post here.)  There are already a host of similar options available including Flock, Wed Pics and Capsule.  All are growing in popularity and receiving rave reviews.

And, as is often the case with technology, today’s applications are just scratching the surface of what we will come to expect from the wedding experience.  Appy Couple and Our Wedding Usher (still in beta testing) will allow couples to create custom wedding apps with benefits extending well beyond photo sharing.  Appy Couple features an events section where invitations can appear on guest smartphones by event, so if 10 friends are invited to the bachelor party, only those 10 friends will see the invitation.  Our Wedding Usher claims it will offer personal usher services for every guest who downloads the app, ranging from providing directions to venues to suggesting things to do in the area.

We are always looking for new ways to heighten the enjoyment of the wedding weekend for the couples we work with as well as their guests.  What are your experiences and expectations for wedding inspired technology in 2013?  We’d love to hear from your ideas!

2013 Trend #5: Naked Wedding Cakes

Our taste buds have gone into overdrive over the next trend… the Naked Wedding Cake!  Naked cakes use no frosting or fondant, leaving interior cake layers exposed.  We find the approach to be truly drool-worthy.  What a perfect way to showcase fresh organic and locally sourced ingredients!  Naked wedding cakes have become increasingly popular outside the U.S. during the past few years.  With celebrities like Hillary Duff opting for a naked cake at her wedding reception, and the likes of the Momofuku Milk Bar already offering several varieties, we predict the popularity of naked wedding cakes will explode in 2013.  Check out the tantalizing photos below and let us know if you agree!

PS – If you haven’t had the opportunity to check out Momofuku Milk Bar – a Mecca of sweet deliciousness which we referenced above – it is well worth the trip to one of their locations in and around NYC (and soon Montauk).  We highly recommend the crack pie.  If you don’t focus on how much butter might be in this luscious concoction, we promise pure heaven!

Jeanine and Matt, October 6th, 2012

On this freezing cold winter afternoon, we are inspired to take a break from 2013 Event Trends to share a little sunshine from one our favorite weddings of the past season.  When you see the infectious smiles on Jeanine and Matt’s faces in their gorgeous wedding photos below, you’ll know why we loved working with them so much!  (Many thanks to Adeline & Grace Photography for sharing.)  Jeanine and Matt are as warm and sunny as the pictures exude, and their wedding day celebration followed suit.  Despite a rainy forecast, skies cleared in time for a beautiful outdoor ceremony in front of the vines at Saltwater Farm Vineyard.    Vibrant seasonal flowers, the happy sounds of a steel pan band, lots of fun lawn games and plenty of delicious bites from Coastal Gourmet helped them create an upbeat joyful day to be enjoyed with their large family and friends.
